M and Iris are Living in Sin!

M and I are having our housewarming party next weekend to show the new apartment to our (mostly vanilla) friends and family. I need suggestions for food to serve: things that are easy to make ahead of time and don't require a lot of work to keep warm or cold. Basically I want to set them out and not worry about them again.

I've done a bit of research and found some things that would fit with the theme of the party, like Mississippi Sin Dip and Deviled Eggs. To drink: Original Sin, perhaps. Grin.

Other ideas? (I'm actually soliciting help here, folks.)

Well, if you're going for a sin theme, I'd make sure to have apples available.

Chocolate covered strawberries always seem sinful to me too, though I'm not sure why...

Brilliant, Rose! I love the apple connection.

Iris, this might be a little far out for you, but here goes...anything with nuts. For Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, apples dipped in honey is traditionally served at the dinner to signify the sweetness of the new year. Nuts are avoided, as the Hebrew word for nut has the same numerical value as the word ‘Sin’ in Hebrew. So Nuts symbolize sin. An apple walnut tart would cover your bases!

Gin & Sin:

1 1/2 oz gin
1 oz orange juice
1 oz lemon juice
1/2 tsp grenadine syrup

In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine all of the ingredients. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass.

And... Rose mentioned chocolate covered strawberries. I'm procrastinating so I did a little search... turns out that they are called "naughty strawberries" when they are dipped in chocolate. I'd definitely serve those!

Anyway, are you going to put out a card with the name of each dish? :)

Sara, that's great! I love having multicultural, multilayered references to sin. :-) And if things get too busy, I'll put out sliced apples and bowls of mixed nuts.

sparkle, my dear, thank you for all the research. I had thought about labeling everything, but not everyone coming actually received the "Living in Sin" Evite--some just got a generic verbal "Come to our housewarming party" invitation. And there will be kids coming. If it were an adults-with-senses-of-humor-only invite list, I would definitely put out label cards!

Maybe we'll have another party with the same theme and only invite kinky friends...

Seems like "sin"="dessert" for most recipes.

There's always the route of serving things that are considered forbidden by particular religions (say, pork products).

Tomatoes used to be considered both a poison and (later) an aphrodisiac, which makes them a little sinful, so those might be an option.

With food, sin seems tied to decadence (the sin of gluttony?) so anything really rich would fit the bill.

If I think of something more useful, I'll chime in again later.

Well, there's always rump roast, whipped potatoes, and roasted beets, for a spankingtheme, but they aren't exactly hors d'oeuvres.

Sorry, I just found this as I have been buried in a huge family problem and projuct which I think means the party is this weekend - maybe yesterday. Hope it was fun, and all went well. I'm very happy for you both in your new life!

Former chef speaking here --
When it comes to sin, you might want to consider something with figs, perhaps, split open with a mellow cheese, perhaps mascarpone. Figs have a long history of perceived sinfulness and sexuality. :-)
